There was a time when I’d arrive in a strange town, open up my suitcase and think that I’d actually packed for another person…going somewhere else entirely. If it was a summer weekend in New York, I would have inexplicably packed a winter coat. For a chilly trip to London, I once packed a bikini hoping there might be a hot tub somewhere. There was not.

I have a rayon blend black dress from Target that has been a travel staple for me and never wrinkles. I used to try and bring more fancy things, but I’ve found that invariably the high heels don’t work well for sightseeing in New York and I don’t want to spend time ironing in the hotel room. Here’s a great visual for how to go about packing.

One thing I’d add, is to bring tights. You may head out on a chilly evening, want to wear that black dress and need some warmth on your legs. Some cute patterned tights will fit the bill and can also be worn under shorts if you want another evening outfit – plus tights don’t take up much room.

Great advice. Just spent 3 months in Europe and these are most of the things I packed too. Remember too that YOU will be carrying, dragging and lifting all your STUFF up and down stairs and across town, onto public transport, etc. Keep it light. Pack some things you won’t mind leaving behind too. then you have room for NEW things!
