I’ve never been hugely into the idea of detoxes. In theory they seem good but if looked upon as a panacea to fix a weight problem or a long term bad eating habits, they don’t really work. They are generally temporary fixes. That said, I had a lot of success with a no sugar detox I did last month. In a way what you are doing with a detox is retraining your habits especially when you do something for say, longer than a week. During the no sugar detox, I became conscious of just how much sugar I had actually been eating - a lot. I ate sugar when I was sad, when I was anxious, or even when I was happy (as a “reward” for something). Because I was “detoxing” I had to figure out other ways to self soothe. A cup of green tea, a walk, something other than sugar.
Last week I tried another detox with Evolution Catering that specializes in healthy door-delivered meals. Once a month they have a “detox week” where they serve food with no sugar, wheat or dairy. One of the things I found with going off sugar (though I still eat sugar, I am much more conscious of when I eat it and so eat it much less) was that it trained me to eat other foods. The Evolution Catering detox menu was filled with things I wouldn’t otherwise eat – not because they weren’t delicious, but because I tend to be pretty boring when it comes to food. I probably only have a few dishes I can make with any real confidence. No meat, no dairy, no gluten, no sugar? I mean what’s left. Lots. I had carrot ginger soup, salmon, all kinds of delicious grilled veggies, egg fritattas…all of it delicious.
What I discovered on this detox (as I did with the no sugar – though this one was much shorter) was that there are all kinds of food still available to me if I want to say, cut back on red meat or eliminate wheat for some reason. I also felt better not stuffing my face with a bunch of bread which is what I do a lot.
If you are in the bay area and are in need of catering services – or want a week or two off from cooking (maybe you’ve got a new baby or like the idea of healthy meals delivered to your door) check out Evolution Catering. Kat, the owner is really awesome, very inventive and makes delicious meals – all delivered. What could be better than that.
