I started the Couch-to-5K Program made famous by Cool Runnings. It’s designed, as you can guess to get you from the couch to a 5K in about 2 months, easing gradually into the habit. I have tried running periodically over the years but almost always tried to overdo it and so, frustrated, would stop early in the game. The only gym really close to me recently shut down, and the area I love to hike is simply too far away now that I am working full time. So running it is.
The Cool Running site has a lot great articles and motivation for beginners as well as info about where you can find that 5K once you are done. There’s a fairly active community as well.
There are a number of apps you can download to help you with the program – one put out by Cool Running themselves. I went with Get Running because it includes warm up and cool down time and lets me listen to music, but they look similar. The Get Running app also has a very soothing Australian lady to guide you, and I guess I’m a sucker for accents. It’s $2.99, whereas the Cool Running Couch to 5K app is $1.99. But I like all the features and the easy visual cues (and the accent) on the Get Running app and for an extra $1 it was worth it.
If you’d like to join in, I’ll be posting updates on the Facebook page as well as on this blog. Good luck!

I’m just starting the couch to 5k as well, and JB is a few weeks in. I forgot to wrap the ankle I sprained last summer when I did my first session, so I’m probably going to let it rest for a few days, but then I’m in!
Good luck on the 5k plan. Always be sure to a few days off to rest in between your hard workouts, it will keep you from burning out or injuring yourself.
